Left-Handed Bat Luis Valbuena Officially Activated From The DL

Updated: May 2, 2017

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim activated corner infielder Luis Valbuena from the DL earlier today. As a result of this transaction, the ball club subsequently optioned right-handed reliever José Valdéz to the minors.

Valdéz appeared in a single game for the Angels in the later stages of April. In his lone appearance, he tossed one inning and surrendered a pair of earned runs via the long ball. His limited experience in the big leagues made him expendable.

Valbuena was acquired in the offseason in order to give the Halos’ lineup some depth and versatility. However, an injury he incurred in Spring Training forced him to miss the first several weeks of the regular season. Valbuena invested the last set of days with the Inland Empire 66ers, though, in order to get adequately adjusted to live pitching again.

On account of C.J. Cron being on the 10-day DL, this is a major relief for the squad. The team’s offense is sporadic, so Valbuena could very well play a role in changing that. Valbuena’s rehab assignment (by the way) went really well by and large. So change could certainly be on the horizon. The left-handed hitter manufactured a strong .348 average while down there and collected three extra base hits over a half dozen games. Yes, these are minor league results. That truth cannot be meddled with in any way, shape, or form. However, it is still encouraging to see Valbuena on the right path.

Let alone his perceivable success in the minors the last few days, Valbuena did well in 2016 when he played for the divisional opponent (and, alas, first place… for now at least) Astros. In just 90 games of action, the Venezuelan ballplayer posted a career high .260 average. The .260 average was supplemented by 13 dingers and 40 RBIs.

Granted Valbuena is officially back he will not be in the lineup this evening per indications from cbssports.com. Rather, that designation will go to Jefry Marté. Marté was a key player in helping the Angels take the series from the Rangers on Sunday afternoon by accumulating 3 crucial RBIs in total. So, while fans will have to wait a little longer to see what Valbuena can do, at least one guy is finally returning from the DL. The team at least looks slightly more whole at this juncture. That is an absolute positive.
